Upper intermediate 2 - class 7 (5/06/24)

 This week we discussed the topic of the news on pages 21 to 23. 

Hay que estar al día - You have to keep up to date

To start off, we did a group brainstorming of ways to keep up with the world news: 

el internet - online

la radio - the radio

la televisión - TV

los chismes - gossip

los periódicos - the newspapers

las redes sociales - social media

el ordenador - the computer

¿Sigues la actualidad? ¿Cómo te informas?

Do you keep up with current affairs? How do you get the news?

No me interesan las noticias porque siempre son noticias malas.

I am not interested in the news because it is always bad news. 

Es importante estar al tanto de las noticias para tener temas de conversación en el trabajo o  en el autobús.

It is important to be informed in order to have topics of conversation at work or on the bus.

 We reviewed the vocabulary to make physical descriptions and learned what verbs we use to make physical descriptions.

We made examples with each of the verbs:

Yo soy rubia, él es calvo, ellas son jóvenes, ella es alta....

I wear a ponytail, she wears earrings, he wears a t-shirt, they wear a beard...


Él tiene barba, ella tiene el pelo rubio y rizado, nosotros tenemos los ojos azules, yo tengo la nariz pequeña.

He has a beard, she has curly blond hair, we have blue eyes, I have a small nose.

  • Next, each one made a description of the characters on page 23, then, we corrected it in common.


Él es pelirrojo, tiene barba y bigote y lleva una gorra.

He is ginger, has a beard and a moustache and has a cap.


Ella es guapa y joven, lleva gafas y una camisa y tiene el pelo negro.

  She is pretty and young, has glasses and a shirt and has dark hair.


Ella es alta, tiene el pelo rizado y rubio y lleva una camiseta negra.

She is tall, has curly blond hair and wears a black shirt.



We practiced descriptions a little bit more by playing who's who and guessing famous people.

To finish we learned vocabulary about clothes.

Upper intermediate 2 - class 6 (29/05/24)

 This week we started by describing the photograph on page 16. 

  • ¿Dónde crees que están? 
          Where do you think they are?

          Creo que están en la consulta del veterinario

         I think they are at the vets.

  • ¿Qué le ha podido suceder al perro?
          What do you think happened to the dog?
            
          El perro tiene dolores en sus piernas traseras 
      
          The dog has a pain on their back legs.
  • ¿De qué crees que pueden estar hablando?
         What do you think they are talking about?

         Quizás están buscando una solución al problema. Quizás el perro necesita una operación.
       
         They might be looking for a solution. Maybe the dog needs surgery.
  • ¿Por qué crees que el dueño del animal ha acudido a esta persona?
         Why do you think the owner has come to this person?
 
         El veterinario es un profesional y el dueño estaba muy preocupado

         The vet is a professional and the owner was very worried.
  • ¿Qué crees que va a ocurrir después? ¿Cómo va a terminar la situación?
         What do you think it is going to happen after? How will this situation end?

         Cuando el perro se recupere, volverá a casa con sus dueños

         When the dog has gotten better, they will return home with their owners.          


In the second part of the class, we reacted to problems posed on page 15. Sample answers: 

  •  A: Estoy agotada y la verdad es que no me apetece ir a comprar algo contigo.
                I am wrecked and the truth is that I don't feel like going shopping with you.
          
          B:  ¡Vaya! No te preocupes que puedo ir yo sola. 
               
                Oh no! Don't worry. I can go by myself. 
  • A: Nunca dejo el coche en doble fila y no me salto los semáforos, pero he recibido una notificación de Tráfico para acudir al juzgado.
             I never double park and I don't skip the traffic lights, but I have received a notification from the Traffic Police Headquarters to go to court.

         B:  Cálmate, seguro que es un error. Ve y averigua que pasó.
               
              Calm down, I am sure it is a mistake. Go and find out what happened.

  • A: Estoy muy agobiado porque la situación familiar en casa es muy difícil. El domingo tengo que ir a una comida con todos y no sé qué hacer. 
          I am very overwhelmed because the family situation is very difficult. On Sunday I have to go to a family lunch with everyone and I don't know what to do. 

         B: Si yo fuera tú, evitaría ir. ¡Quizás puedes inventarte una excusa!
             
             If I were you, I would avoid going. Perhaps you can make up an excuse!


In the last part of the class, we did the listening activity on page 19: 

  • A: Las cervezas son mi pasión. ¡Tómate una conmigo!
              Beers are my passion. Get one with me!

  • B: Si eres tan goloso como yo, ¿qué tal si nos vemos por allí alguna vez?
             If you have a sweet tooth as I do, how about if we meet there some time?

  • C: Saborea el mejor café solo, que nadie te moleste
             Savour the best coffee alone, don't let anyone bother you.

  • D: 'Come como quieras, pero come barato' es su lema. ¿Te animas a venir?
              'Eat as you like, but eat cheap' is their motto. Do you feel like coming?

  • E: Voy a seguir viajando por muchas ciudades y sería padre conocer otros lugares donde estar con otras personas. ¿Me aconsejas alguno parecido a este en tu ciudad?
             I am going to keep travelling around many cities and it would be great to know other                     places where I can be with other people. Can you recommend me a similiar one in your              city?

Beginners 2 - class 6 (28/05/24)

 This week we started by revising the topic of directions - Las direcciones - by using the map on page 20: 


1. Siga todo recto, tome la primera calle a la izquierda, y el banco está a la izquierda.

           Go straight ahead, take the first street on the left and the bank is on the left


2. Continúe todo recto, y el supermercado está a la derecha.

Go straight ahead and the supermarket is on the right.


3. Siga todo recto, tome la tercera calle a la derecha y la iglesia está a la derecha.

Go straight ahead, take the third street on the right and the church is on the right.

4. Gire a la derecha, y la comisaría está a la derecha.

Turn right and the police station is on the right.


5. Siga todo recto, tome la segunda calle a la izquierda, después la primera a la derecha,

y la piscina está delante.

Go straight ahead, take the second street on the left, then the first street on the right

and the swimming pool is in front of you.


6. Siga todo recto, tome la cuarta calle a la derecha, y el museo está a la izquierda.

Intermediate - class 5 (27/05/24)

 This week we started by revising the verbs in the future tense - El futuro

First, we brainstormed verbs that can be used to talk about holidays: 

ir - to go

viajar - to travel

nadar - to swim

visitar - to visit

quedarse - to stay

alojarse - to stay

alquilar - to rent

ver - to see

comer / cenar - to eat / to have dinner

beber - to drink

conocer a - to meet someone for the first time

quedar con - to meet with / to catch up

caminar - to walk

bailar - to dance

dormir - to sleep

descansar - to rest relajarse - to relax

leer - to read

tomar el sol - to sunbathe

montar en bicicleta - to ride a bike

Verb IR in presente tense according to the person + a + verb in infinitive:

El futuro simple - The simple future (used for predictions)

Verb in infinitive + ending: -é, -ás, -á, -emos, -éis, -án.

cantaremos - We will sing

Irregular verbs

tener (to have) - tendré, tendrás, tendrá... 

saber (to know something) - sabré, sabrás, sabrá...

poder (to be able to) - podré, podrás, podrá...

hacer (to do/make) - haré, harás, hará...

salir (to go out) - saldré, saldrás, saldrá...

haber (to have) - habré, habrás, habrá...


We filled in the gaps in the sentences on page 17:

In pairs we planned a holiday using the information given on page 16:

  • El viaje empezará con unas cervezas en el tren

        The trip will begin with a few beers on the train.

         We will get there at 12.

  • Recorreremos la ciudad y almorzaremos en un restaurante típico
         We will walk around the city and we will have lunch at a typical restaurant
