PRE-INTERMEDIATE COURSE, 2022, CLASS 2

We continued with some revision of vocab related to Los Reyes Magos – The Three Kings – and watched a video about El día de los Reyes Magos – January 6th.

ELEMENTARY COURSE 2022, CLASS 1

 In our first class, we introduced ourselves and talked about our likes and dislikes. We read ‘Mis cosas favoritas’ (my favourite things) on page 1.

Some new words: 

los personajes - the characters

In groups, we asked each other about our favourite film, sport, food, place and music. Some examples below: 


¿Cuál es tu película favorita? - what is your favourite film?

Mi película favorita es Solo en Casa porque es muy divertida y me río mucho - My favourite film is Home Alone because it is very funny and I laugh a lot. 


¿Cuál es tu comida favorita? - What is your favourite food?

Mi comida favorita es la comida china. Me gusta mucho el arroz y el pollo frito. La como al menos una vez al mes. - My favourite food is Chinese food. I like rice and fried chicken a lot. I eat it at least once a month. 


¿Practicas deporte? ¿Cuál es tu deporte favorito? - Do you do any sports? What is your favourite sport?

No practico ningún deporte pero soy una persona muy activa. Camino por la playa todos los días con mi perro. - I don't practise any sports but I am a very active person. I walk on the beach every day with my dog. 


¿Cuál es tu ciudad preferida? - What is your favourite city? 

Mi ciudad favorita es Londres. Es una ciudad muy dinámica y siempre hay algo para hacer. Visito Londres todos los veranos porque mi mejor amigo vive allí. - My favourite city is London. It is a very dynamic city and there is always something to do. I visit London every summer because my best friend lives there.


¿Qué tipo de música te gusta? - What type of music do you like?

Escucho todo tipo de música pero prefiero la música pop porque me gusta ir a las discotecas y bailar. - I listen to all types of music but I prefer pop music because I like to go to discos and dance. 


BEGINNERS 2 COURSE, 2022, CLASS 1

 In our first lesson of our beginners 2 course, we revised some of the contents we learnt in the previous course. We also learnt some useful expressions we put into practice during the class.

¿Cómo se dice…? – How do you say…?

¿Cómo se escribe…? – How do you write…?

¿Qué significa…? – What does … mean?

Un momento, ¿puedes repetir? – Hold on a moment, can you repeat?

Más despacio, por favor – Slower, please.

Vamos a hablar… vamos a estudiar… vamos a repasar… vamos a aprender … - we are going to talk about… we are going to study… we are going to revise…. We are going to learn… 


We revised some basic questions and we answered them in pairs. Then we shared our answers.

¿De dónde eres? – Where are you from?

¿Dónde vives? – Where do you live?

¿Estás casado /casada? – Are you married?

¿Tienes hijos / hermanos o hermanas / nietos? – Do you have children/brothers and sisters/ grandchildren?

¿Cuántos años tiene tu hermano? – How old is your brother?

¿A qué te dedicas? – What do you do?

¿Hablas español? – Do you speak Spanish?

INTERMEDIATE COURSE, 2022, CLASS 2

We looked at some vocab around El día de los Reyes Magos.

portarse mal – to behave badly

we rewatched a video about Papa Noel and Gaspar


Gordiflón – fatso

barrigón – a big belly (-ón is the suffix to make things bigger)

un villancico – a Spanish Christmas carol

We then watched a video about la cabalgata

we discussed the idea of los falsos amigos – words that look like English words but which have different meanings

For homework we have to watch the following video about El Tio de Nadal en Cataluña and explain what the tradition is and what are its origins.

NEW YEAR SPANISH COURSES, 2022

 New Year Courses for all levels will start in mid-January. We will begin online for the first two weeks and re-evaluate then, but the intention is to get


back to face-to-face classes this term. As always, our focus is on practical, spoken Spanish. All courses are ten weeks long.

Covid policy

Because of the high number of Covid cases at the moment, we are going to begin all classes online for the first two weeks of the term. We will then re-evaluate. The intention is to return to face-to-face classes and to have a total of 50% online and 50% in the classroom.

In the classroom, we will ask students to wear masks and maintain social distance. All of our teachers are fully vaccinated.

Location

Face to face classes will take place in IT Sligo. Online classes will be on Zoom.

Dates and times

All classes are from 7.30pm to 8.45pm, except for the Leaving Cert course, which is from 5pm to 6.15pm.  

Most courses begin the week of January 24th, except for the Pre-Intermediate and Intermediate courses, which begin a week earlier.

Price

All courses - except the LC course - are €120 for 10 weeks. We have a discounted rate of €100 for the unwaged – full-time students and social welfare recipients. Please contact spanishinsligo@gmail.com for this rate. The Leaving Cert course is €110. 

 

We have six courses available this term, as follows…

Beginners – Wednesdays

This is our course for absolute beginners. We will cover introductions, food, numbers, telling the time, days of the week, directions, jobs and some basic grammar. The focus will be on practical, spoken Spanish. Starts Wednesday, January 26th.  Book a place here

 

Beginners 2 – Mondays

A follow-on course from our Beginner course of last term. Suitable for people who have done a short Beginner course in the past. Starts Monday, January 24th. Book a place here

Elementary – Tuesdays

This is a course for those who have done some basic courses in the past and are looking to expand their knowledge of the Spanish language. Starts Tuesday, January 25th. Book a place here. 

Pre-Intermediate – Mondays

A course for those who have been studying for a few years and want to continue deepening their ability in Spanish. Students in this level will already be able to communicate to a certain extent in Spanish though need help with accuracy, vocabulary and fluency. Starts Monday, January 17th. Book a place here

Intermediate - Wednesdays

Our highest level course. Students in this level can already converse in Spanish on a wide range of topics, though they need continued improvement in accuracy, vocabulary and fluency. Starts Wednesday, January 19th. Book a place here

Leaving Cert Preparation course

A ten week course that will focus on the oral exam but which will also cover the major verb tenses, listening, important vocabulary and the opinion question. Starts Thursday, January 27th at 5pm. The cost is €110 per student. Book a place here.
