PRE-INTERMEDIATE COURSE, 2022, CLASS 8

 Clase 8

We began by looking at some irregular imperatives

estar – esté

salir – sal

ser – sé

ir – ve

haz – hacer

pon - poner

decir – di

tener – ten

ten cuidado – take care

dime la verdad – tell me the truth

sé bueno/a – be good

esté tranquilo – be calm

pon la mesa – set the table




 

We corrected the homework from p.18

There was a lot of vocabulary in this exercise

chaleco salvavidas – a lifejacket

evitar – to avoid

un sillín – a saddle

resbalar – to slip

una tabla – a board

ten precaución – be cautious

el cabello – el pelo

zapatillas de deporte – sports shoes

adecuado – appropriate

los oídos – the inner ear

las orejas – the outer ear

tapones – ear plugs

deshidratarse – to get dehydrated

For homework we have to do exercise c on page 18 and also write 3 pieces of advice – 3 consejos – for a particular sport.

BEGINNERS 2 COURSE, 2022, CLASS 7

 This week we learnt about physical descriptions: 

¿Cómo es él/ella? – What’s he/she like?

Él es bajo – He is short

Él es alto – He is tall

Él es gordo – He is fat

Él es delgado – He is thin

Él es viejo – He is old

Ella es joven – She is young

Ella es rubia – She is blond

Ella es morena – She has dark hair

Ella es pelirroja – She is ginger

Él es feo – He is ugly

Ella es guapa – She is pretty

Tiene los ojos verdes / marrones / azules – He/she has green / brown / blue eyes

Tiene el pelo largo / corto / rizado – He has long / short / curly hair

Lleva barba / gafas / bigote – He has a beard / glasses / moustache





We learnt some useful verbs to talk about descriptions:

Ser – To be

Yo soy – I am

Tú eres – You are

Él / ella es – He / she is

Nosotros somos – We are

Vosotros sois – You are

Ellos / ellas son – They are


Tener – to have

Yo tengo – I have

Tú tienes – You have

Él /ella tiene – He/she has

Nosotros tenemos – We have

Vosotros tenéis – You have

Ellos tienes – they have



We also described the pictures on the next page: 

1.Ellos son delgados y guapos. Él es moreno y ella es rubia. Ella tiene el pelo largo y él tiene el pelo corto. They are slim and pretty. He has dark hair and she is blond. She has long hair and he has short hair.

2.Él es gordo y calvo. Él bebe una cerveza. – He is fat and bald. He is drinking a beer.

3. Él lleva un sombrero, lleva gafas y tiene barba. Tiene pelo canoso – He is wearing a hat, he is wearing glasses and he has a beard. He has white hair.

4. Él es delgado y calvo. Lleva gafas y barba de chivo – He is slim and bald. He is wearing glasses and goatee beard.

INTERMEDIATE COURSE, 2022, CLASS 7

 Clase 7

We began by looking at some vocab related to the Russian invasion of Ukraine

Los ucranianos

invadir – to invade

los refugiados – refugees

los civiles – civilians

huir – to flee

las sanciones

bloquear las cuentas – to freeze accounts

países vecinos – neighbouring countries

el ejército ruso – the Russian army

 

We then went on to talk about Ciudadanos del mundo – citizens of the world

Some people talked about why they left Spain and went to live in another country.

We talked about “por” and “para”

Fui por amor – I went for love

Fui para trabajar – I went to work

We use “por” with a noun…

“para” with a verb….

Also we use “por” with a time period

Estuve en Londres por 24 años

el occidente – the west

se conocieron en Atenas – they met in Athens

 Clase 7

In this class we revised the topic of imperatives

An imperative (imperativo) is an instruction, command, or piece of advice. In English this is simple… “Go!”, “Eat!”, “Don’t talk!” “Come in” etc.

In Spanish, for the tú form, we use the third person of the present tense for regular verbs…

Come – eat!

Trabaja – work!

Entra – Come in!

We looked at Pepito and his mother on p.16

levántate – get up

lávate – wash

sal – get out

Vuelve pronto – come straight home

some other vocab

te vas a mojar – you are going to get wet

mojar – to wet

mojado – wet




We watched a video and spotted some other imperatives…

Refréscate – cool down

diviértete – have fun

entra

infórmate

disfruta

vive

We then looked at the physical exercises on p.17 and matched the verbs to the activites

da la vuelta – turn around

levanta los brazos – raise your arms

echa la cabeza hacia atrás – put your head back

toca los pies con las manos – touch your feet with your hands

For homework we have to do the exercise on p.17 and 18, matching each consejo to one of the sports mentioned

ELEMENTARY COURSE, 2022, CLASS 6

 This week we continued with the topic of TV and films. 

In the first part of the class, we talked about translations of titles of films in Spanish and found out the titles in English: 


La Jungla de Cristal - Die Hard

En busca de la felicidad - The pursuit of happiness

Tiburón - Jaws

Regreso al futuro - Back to the future

Atrapado en el tiempo - Groundhog Day

Mentiroso compulsivo - Liar liar


In groups, we talked about our favourite shows and films. Some new phrases: 

Me interesan - I find interesting

Me aburren - I find boring

No aguanto - I cannot stand

Los culebrones - soap operas

Las entrevistas - the interviews

La pantalla - the screen

Pago una suscripción - I pay a subscription

Plataformas en línea - online platforms


Some sample answers:

In the last part of the class, in groups we described a film. One example:  


Es una película de Navidad. Trata de un niño que está solo en casa y su familia viaja a París. Dura dos horas y se rodó en América. El actor se llama Macaulay Culkin. La película se llama Solo en casa. 

(It is a Christmas movie. It is about a boy who is alone at home and his family travels to Paris. It is two hours long and was filmed in America. The actor is Macaulay Culkin. The film is called Home alone. 


BEGINNERS 2 COURSE, 2022, CLASS 6

 This week we revised the topic of body parts and illnesses. We learnt the names of some items that are found in pharmacies. 

el inhalador - the inhaler

el jarabe para la tos - the syrup

el protector solar - the sunscreen

la venda - the bandage

la receta - the prescription

la crema - the cream

los antibióticos - the antibiotics

las gotas para los ojos - the eyedrops

las pastillas - the pills / the tablets

Other new phrases: 

tengo náuseas - I have nausea

me encuentro débil - I feel weak

¿Tienes síntomas? - Do you have symptoms?

¿Tienes apetito? - Do you have an appetite?

¿Eres alérgico/a a algo? - Are you allergic to something?

tengo mucha sed - I am very thirsty


We listened to the conversations on pages 19 and 20. Some new words: 

ahora mismo - right now

inmediatamente - immediately

pronto - soon

en seguida - soon, quick


ayer me caí - yesterday I fell

casi no puedo andar - I can barely walk

a ver - let’s see

¿Cree usted que es algo serio? - Do you think it is something serious?

¿Puede darme algo? - Can you give me anything?

le voy a recetar - I am going to prescribe you


In the last part of the class, we did a role play pretending to be at the doctor’s. A sample: 

A: ¿Qué te pasa? - What is wrong?

B: Tengo tos y tengo fiebre. - I have a cough and I have a temperature.

A: Te voy a recetar un jarabe. También necesitas descansar - I am going to prescribe you a syrup. Also, you need to rest. 

B: Vale, gracias ¿Dónde está la farmacia? - Ok, thanks. Where is the pharmacy?

A: La farmacia está al final de la calle, a mano derecha. - The pharmacy is at the end of the street, on the right hand side.

Some words that came up at the beginning of the class

majo/a = simpático/a

me acuerdo – recuerdo

 

we revised the affirmative and negative imperatives in Spanish

come/ no comas

Affirmative – we use the third person

Negative – we use the subjunctive

trabaja / no trabajes

There are some irregular verbs

Poner: pon / no pongas

Tener: ten / no tengas

Salir: sal / no salgas

ser: sé / no seas

 



una casa embrujada – A haunted house

Sobrevivir – to survive

un fantasma - a ghost (note, it ends in "a" but is masculine)

 

No hagas el tonto – don’t play the fool

no olvides cargar el móvil – don’t forget to charge your mobile
