BEGINNERS COURSE, SPRING 2023, CLASS 2

 Week 2

WE revised all of what we did last week.

Buenos días – good morning

Buenas tardes (or Buenas) – good afternoon

¿Qué tal? = ¿Cómo estás? – How are you?

Estoy bien – I’m fine

Estoy fatal – I’m terrible

 

¿Cómo te llamas? – What’s your name?

Me llamo

We added another question

¿De dónde eres? – Where are you from?

Soy de Irlanda – I am from Ireland.

 

In Spanish we have pronouns, like in English, but they are often left out

Yo soy – I am

Soy – I am (leaving out the “yo”, as it is not needed)

 


We talked about the family

Mi padre – my father

Mi madre – my mother

Mi hermano – my brother

Mi hermana – my sister

Mi hijo – my son

Mi hija – my daughter

Mi mujer – my wife

Mi marido – my husband



 

We concentrated on two questions

¿Tienes….? – Do you have…?

¿Tienes hermanos? – Do you have brothers and sisters?

¿Tienes hijos? – Do you have children?

The answer is “Tengo…” – I have…

Tengo un hijo y una hija – I have one son and one daughter

Tengo un hermano y una hermana – I have one brother and one sister

ELEMENTARY COURSE, SPRING 2023, CLASS 2

 This week we talked about places on pages 6 and 7

Las ciudades – The cities

We read two descriptions and we translated the words we did not understand.

No muy lejos de Francia – Not very far from France

Puerto – port

Una ciudad de origen antiguo – A city with an ancient origin

En el mundo entero – worldwide

Una ciudad tranquila – a quiet city

Muy cerca del océano Pacífico – Very close to the Pacific ocean

Es bastante pequeña – It is rather small

Hay muchas tiendas para comprar recuerdos – There are many shops to buy souvenirs



We discussed the uses of the verb “to be” in English “ser” and “estar”

Ser: To talk about what the city is like

¿Cómo es? – What is it like?

Barcelona es muy moderna y dinámica – Barcelona is very modern and dynamic

Antigua es una ciudad pequeña y tranquila – Antigua is a small and quiet city

Estar: To talk about the location of the place

¿Dónde está? – Where is it?

Barcelona está al noroeste de España – Barcelona is in the norwest of Spain.

Antigua está en el sur del país – Antigua is in the south of the country.

 

As a group, we came up with names of cities that fit the descriptions on page 6:

Una ciudad muy grande – A very big city

Londres, París, Madrid – London, Paris, Madrid

Una ciudad turística – A touristic city

Roma, Barcelona, Nueva York – Rome, Barcelona, New York

Una ciudad que está en el sur de Europa – A city which is in the south of Europe

Barcelona, Sevilla – Barcelona, Seville

Una ciudad muy moderna – A very modern city

Valencia, Bilbao

Una ciudad con una playa bonita – A city with a nice beach

Málaga, Huelva

Una ciudad que está en la costa – A city which is in the coast

Murcia

 

We also completed some sentences with the verbs “ser” or “estar” on page 7:

Es muy Antigua –It is an old city

Está en el sur de España – It is in the south of Spain

Está cerca de Sevilla – It is close to Seville

No es una ciudad muy importante – It is not a very important city

Está en la costa atlántica – It is on the Atlantic coast

Es famosa por sus playas – It is famous because of its beaches

Está lejos de Madrid – It is far from Madrid

Es bastante pequeña – It is pretty small

No está en el centro de España – It is not in the centre of Spain

 

We did a describing exercise and we guessed the city. Some new words:

Hay un río famoso – There is a famous river

Que va por el centro de la ciudad – That flows through the centre of the city

La ciudad del amor – The city of love

Un clima muy agradable – A very nice climate

Una ciudad con muchas autopistas – A city with plenty of motorways

Other words we learnt:

Autovía – Main roads in Spain. No need to pay for the toll

Autopista – Mains roads in Spain. Paying for the toll is compulsory

Carreteras convencionales – Other roads

To wrap up the lesson, we did the listening exercise on pages 8 and 9:

Oye Esmeralda, tú no eres de Madrid, ¿verdad? – Hey Esmeralda, you are not from Madrid, are you?

No, soy de Segovia. ¿Has estado allí alguna vez? – No, I am from Segovia. Have you ever been there?

No – No.

Pues no sabes lo que te pierdes – You don’t know what you’re missing out.

Ya me imagino. Si te digo la verdad, no sé ni dónde está, exactamente. – I can imagine that. Honestly, I don’t even know where it is exactly.

Pues mira, Segovia está muy cerca de Madrid, a unos cien kilómetros al noroeste – Well look, Segovia is very close to Mad?rid, at around 100 kilometres up the northwest

Es una ciudad pequeña, ¿no? – It is a small city, isn’t it?

Sí, solo tiene unos cincuenta mil habitantes, aproximadamente – Yes, there is only around 50000 people living there, more or less

Y ¿cómo es? – And, what is it like?

Pues, es una ciudad antigua y muy bonita. No sé, es muy tranquila, pero también es bastante divertida, sobre todo los fines de semana – Well it is an old and beautiful city. I don’t know, it is quiet, but it is also rather fun, especially at weekends.

Y tiene un acueducto muy famoso, ¿verdad? – And it has a very famous bridge, doesn’t it?

Famosísimo. Espera, tengo unas fotos. Mira, este es el acueducto – Very very famous. Hold on, I have some pictures. Look, this is the bridge.

¡Qué bonito! ¿Y eso, qué es? – It is lovely! And what’s that?

La catedral. Es preciosa. – The cathedral. It is gorgeous.

¿Y esto? – And this?

Es una de las muchas Iglesias que tiene. No me acuerdo cómo se llama. – This is one of the many churches it has. I don’t remember its name.

Esto es el Alcázar y esto es la parte Antigua – This is the fortress and this is city’s old part.

¿Y eso? – And that?

Es una calle del barrio judío – It is a Street in the Jewish quarter.

Ah, ¿también tiene un barrio judío? – Oh, does it also have a Jewish quarter?

Sí, pero es muy pequeño – Yes, but it is very small.

 

Another example of a description of a city:

Es una ciudad grande – It is a big city

Es una ciudad muy ruidosa – It is a very noisy city

Está en Europa – It is in Europe

Está en Inglaterra – It is in England

En este país la gente habla inglés – In this country people speak English

Tiene un río muy famoso – It has a very famous river

Tiene muchos monumentos – It has many monuments

 

BEGINNERS 3 COURSE, SPRING 2023, CLASS 2

 This week we started with a quick revision of how to tell the time on page 8:

 

¿Qué hora es? - What time is it?

Son las nueve menos cuarto - 8.45

Son las siete menos veinte - 6.40

Son las nueve y cuarto - 9.15

Son las ocho y veinte - 8.20

Son las siete y media - 7.30

Son las ocho menos diez - 7.50

Son las ocho menos cuarto - 7.45

Son las cuatro y media - 4.30

Son las siete y diez - 7.10

Son las tres y cinco - 3.05

 

 

In the second part of the class we learnt phrases on the weather on page 9:

hace frío - it is cold

hace calor - it is hot

hace viento - it is windy

hace sol - it is sunny

hay nieve - it is snowy

hay lluvia / está lloviendo - it is raining

hay cielos despejados - there are clear skies

hay niebla - it is foggy

hay relámpagos - it is stormy

está nublado - it is cloudy

 

¿Qué tiempo hace en este momento? - What’s the weather like right now?

Hace sol y hace calor. Hace un poco de viento pero hace buen tiempo - It is sunny and warm. It is a bit windy but the weather is nice.

 

We learnt the seasons of the year and talked about the Spanish and Irish weather on page 10:

 

verano - summer

primavera - spring

otoño - autumn

invierno - winter

 

En verano en España hace mucho calor y hace sol. No hay lluvia - In the summer in Spain it is warm and sunny. It doesn’t rain.

En la primavera en Irlanda hay lluvia y a veces hay viento. - In spring in Ireland it rains and sometimes it is windy.

En el otoño en España no hace frío pero hay lluvia. También está nublado - In the autumn in Spain it is not cold but it’s rainy. It is also cloudy.

En el invierno en Irlanda hay tormentas y hay nieve. También hay niebla - In the winter in Ireland it is stormy and snowy. It is also foggy.

 

 

PRE-INTERMEDIATE COURSE, SPRING 2023, CLASS 2

 Week 2

This week we spoke about people’s characters, qualities and defects.

La fidelidad – loyalty, fidelity

El mal genio – bad temper

Tener mal genio – to have a bad temper

Una persona de confianza – a trustworthy person

Me gusto – I like myself, I like how I am

 This week we learnt some vocabulary on pastimes on pages 6 and 7:

Cantar – To sing

cocinar - to cook

In pairs, we talked about your pastimes. Some examples:

¿Te gusta bailar? - Do you like dancing?

Sí, me gusta mucho bailar - Yes, I like dancing a lot

¿Te gusta aprender español? - Do you like learning Spanish?

Me encanta aprender español - I love learning Spanish

¿Te gusta leer? - Do you like reading?

No, no me gusta mucho leer - I don’t like reading much

 

We translated the sentences on page 8:

1.A María le gusta pasear – María likes going for walks.

2.A Peter le gusta cantar – Peter likes singing

3.A Sheila le gusta nadar – Sheila likes swimming

4.A Donal le gusta bailar – Donal likes dancing

5.A Juan no le gusta ver la tele – Juan doesn’t like watching TV

6.A mi hermana le gusta leer - My sister likes reading.

BEGINNER COURSE, SPRING 2023, CLASS 1

 Week 1

We looked at some sounds in Spanish

ñ – pronounced like “ny” – España, niño

ll – pronounced like “ly” – me llamo, Sevilla

j or g – pronounced at the back of the throat like the “ch” in Scottish “loch” – mujer, gente, general

h – always silent

c – pronounced like an “s” before “I” and “e” – cien, cinco

 

We then put together a basic conversation

Hola, buenos días – good morning

Buenas tardes (or just “Buenas”) – Good afternoon

¿Qué tal? – how are things?

¿Cómo estás? – How are you?

Estoy bien – I am well

Estoy más o menos – I’m only OK

Estoy fatal – I am terrible

¿Cómo te llamas? – What is your name?

Me llamo….. – my name is…. (literally “I am called….”)

Encantado – nice to meet you (If you are a man)

Encantada – Nice to meet you (if you are a woman)

ELEMENTARY COURSE, SPRING 2023, CLASS 1

 This week we started with a short introduction about ourselves in pairs and we went on to revise colours and clothes on page 3:
