¿Tienes planes para la Semana Santa? - Have you got any plans for Easter?
Sample answer:
No tengo muchos planes. Espero relajarme y disfrutar con mi familia. Iremos a la playa y pasearemos con mi perro. Tengo muchas ganas. - I don't have many plans. I hope to relax and enjoy with my family. We will go to the beach and we will walk with my dog. I look forward to it.
Vocabulario de Semana Santa:
el paso - statue/image of Jesus, Mary of a Saint
los costaleros - devoted people who carry the statue on their shoulders
el cante de saetas - songs that people sing to the image
la vela - the candle
los nazarenos - devoted people who walk alongside the image. They have their faces covered and wear a cone-shaped hat.
On page 24 we discussed events that happen during Easter in Spain:
hay vacaciones - there are holidays
la gente pasa tiempo con sus familias - people spend time with their families
los cantantes cantan saetas - singers sing sacred songs
los creyentes caminan junto al paso de Semana Santa porque tienen fe - the believers walk alongside the image because they have faith
la policía corta las calles y el tráfico es horrible - the police cuts off the roads and the traffic is horribe
la gente trasnocha porque sale de fiesta - the people go to bed late because they party
los costaleros llevan los pasos a sus espaldas - the float bearers carry the statues on their shoulders
las bandas de música tocan muy alto y es imposible dormir - the music bands play very loud music and it is impossible to sleep
siempre hace mal tiempo - llueve, hace viento y bajan las temperaturas - there is always bad weather: it rains, it is windy and the temperatures decrease.
In pairs, we talked about the things that fascinate or bother us about Easter by using the present subjunctive. Sample answers:
Me molesta que haya música por la calle. ¡Qué ruidoso! - It bothers me that there is music on the streets. How noisy!
Me fascina que los costaleros lleven los pasos a sus espaldas, aunque, ¿no tienen problemas de espalda después? - It fascinates me that the float bearers carry the statues on their backs although, do they not have back problems afterwards?
Me fastidia que siempre haga mal tiempo - It annoys me that the weather is always bad.
Estoy harta de que la policía corte las calles porque el tráfico es horrible - I am fed up with the police cutting off the streets because the traffic is horrible.
Me emociona que los cantantes canten saetas. Es muy bonito de ver. - It moves me that singers sing sacred songs. It is very beautiful to see.
In the last part of the class, we did the reading comprehension on page 25. Some new words and expressions:

el recorrido - the route
las luces se apagan - the lights are turned off
