Pretender hacer – to intend to do

Deprimente – depressing

Deprimido – depressed

Tener la depresión – to have depression

El bar volverá a abrir mañana – the bar will reopen tomorrow

 

We then went on to talk about Regalos

No me gusta gastar dinero – spend money

Un frasco de perfume – a bottle of perfume

Perfume – means both perfume and cologne

Un vale – a token

Bombones – caramelos

Frutos secos – nuts

Ser presumido/a – to be vain, careful with your appearance

Cuidarse el aspecto – to look after your appearance

 

We talked about object pronouns

Tengo una manzana. La voy a comer.

Tengo un bocadillo. Lo voy a comer.

Quiero entradas. Las voy a comprar.

Quiero billetes. Los voy a comprar.

We then listened to short interview

Una entrevista – an interview

Un reportero – a reporter

Un periodista – a journalist

The interview was all about “the last time” – la última vez

There were two different forms of questions…

¿Cuándo fue la última vez que comiste pescado?

¿Cuándo comiste pescado por última vez?

Chatear por internet – to chat online

Charlar – to chat face to face

Llorar de risa – to cry with laughter

Aburrirse en clase – to get bored in class

Decir una mentira – to tell a lie

Olvidar algo importante – to forget something important

 

We revised the past tense

AR verbs – hablé, hablaste, habló, hablamos, hablasteis, hablaron

IR/ER verbs – comí, comiste, comió, comimos, comisteis, comieron

Irregulars

Ir – fui, fuiste, fue, fuimos, fuisteis, fueron

Decir – dije, dijiste, dijo, dijimos, dijisteis, dijeron

Tener – tuve, tuviste, tuvo, tuvimos, tuvisteis, tuvieron

Estar – same as Tener except with es- before the verb – estuve…etc

 

We asked the questions in groups and reported back to the class.

For homework we have to listen to the conversation again and complete all the part (a) on p.6 – note, we do NOT have to complete every part of the answer, only part a.

BEGINNERS 2 COURSE, 2023, CLASS 2

 This week we revised the topic of food on page 5.

¿Qué ves en las fotos? - What do you see in the photos?

Foto 1 - Hay queso, leche, mantequilla, huevos y miel - There are cheese, milk, butter, eggs and honey.

Foto 2 - Hay salmón, queso, legumbres, huevos, nueces, pollo y bistec - There are salmon, cheese, beans, eggs, walnuts, chicken and steak.

Foto 3 - Hay pan y arroz - There are bread and rice.

Foto 4 - Hay patatas fritas y patatas - There are chips and potatoes

Foto 5 - Hay una ensalada - there is a salad.

Foto 6 - Hay un plato de pasta con salsa de tomate - There is a plate of pasta with tomato sauce.

Foto 7 - Hay un vaso de agua - there is a glass of water.

In pairs, we talked about likes and dislikes.

¿Te gusta el queso? - Do you like cheese?

No, no me gusta nada el arroz - No, I don’t like rice at all

¿Te gustan los huevos? - Do you like eggs?

In the last part of the class, we revised the numbers from 20 to 100 in Spanish:

40 - cuarenta

ELEMENTARY COURSE, 2023, CLASS 1

 In our first lesson of our elementary course, we revised some of the contents we learnt in the previous course. We also learnt some useful expressions we put into practice during the class.

¿Cómo se dice…? – How do you say…?

¿Cómo se escribe…? – How do you write…?

¿Qué significa…? – What does … mean?

Un momento, ¿puedes repetir? – Hold on a moment, can you repeat?

Más despacio, por favor – Slower, please.

Vamos a hablar… vamos a estudiar… vamos a repasar… vamos a aprender … - we are going to talk about… we are going to study… we are going to revise…. We are going to learn…

 

We revised some questions and we answered them in pairs. Then we shared our answers.

¿De dónde eres? – Where are you from?

¿Estás casado /casada? – Are you married?

¿Tienes hijos / hermanos o hermanas / nietos? – Do you have children/brothers and sisters/ grandchildren?

In the second part of the class, we revised the vocabulary on physical descriptions on page 4:

1.Es joven y tiene el pelo rizado - She is young and has curly hair.

2.Es feo y tiene los ojos verdes - He is ugly and has green eyes.

3.Es guapa y tiene el pelo largo - She is pretty and has long hair.

4.Es viejo/anciano y tiene el pelo gris - He is elderly and has grey hair.

5.Tiene los ojos azules y lleva gafas - He has blue eyes and has glasses.

6.Es un gato. Es gordo y bajo - He is a cat. He is fat and short.

7.Tiene el pelo liso y es rubia. She has long straight hair.

8.Es calvo y lleva gafas - he is bald and has glasses.

9.Tiene el pelo largo y lleva barba - He has long hair and has a beard.

10. No tiene pelo y lleva perilla - He has no hair and has a goatee.

Pretendo beber – I intend to drink

FALSO AMIGO – “pretender” NEVER means “pretend”

Me hace mucha ilusión – it makes me excited, it gives me hope

FALSO AMIGO – “ilusión” here does not mean “illusion”

We answered some questions about new year resolutions

¿Qué propósitos hiciste en el pasado que no cumpliste? – what resolutions did you make in the past that you didn´t stick to.

Cumpir – to complete, to obey, to follow through with, to follow

We made a list of expressions that we use to talk about intentions

Pretendo hacer

Tengo la intención de hacer

Voy a hacer

Haré (simple future)

Planeo hacer

Mi intención es hacer

BEGINNERS´ COURSE, 2023, CLASS 1

 

In our first class, we introduced ourselves and we talked briefly about our knowledge of the Spanish language and culture.

We also talked about the Spanish pronunciation and we saw some examples of words with those particular pronunciations.

“ñ” in España (Spain), uña (nail), niño (child)

“ll” in lluvia (rain), llave (key), llamar (call, ring)

“j, g” in mujer  (woman), gente (people) genio (genious)

“q” in queso (cheese) que (what)

“r, rr” in perro  (dog) borracho (drunk), ratón (mouse)

“h” in hola (hello) hielo (ice), hermano (brother)

“v” in volver  (go back, come back), volar (fly), ver (see)

“c, z” in cien (one hundred), zapato (shoe), diez (ten)

 

We learnt the basic introductions and we practiced them in pairs.

Buenas tardes – Good afternoon / evening

Buenas noches – Good night

¿Qué tal? – How are you?
