BEGINNERS 3 COURSE, SPRING 2021, CLASS 6

 

This week we talked about places. We learnt different words and expressions to describe them and we put them into practice.

Las ciudades – The cities

We read two descriptions and we translated the words we did not understand.

No muy lejos de Francia – Not very far from France

Puerto – port

Una ciudad de origen antiguo – A city with an ancient origin

En el mundo entero – worldwide

Una ciudad tranquila – a quiet city

Muy cerca del océano Pacífico – Very close to the Pacific ocean

Es bastante pequeña – It is rather small

Hay muchas tiendas para comprar recuerdos – There are many shops to buy souvenirs

 

We talked about the uses of the verb “to be” in English à “ser” and “estar”

Ser: To talk about what the city is like

¿Cómo es? – What is it like?

Barcelona es muy moderna y dinámica – Barcelona is very modern and dynamic

Antigua es una ciudad pequeña y tranquila – Antigua is a small and quiet city

Estar: To talk about the location of the place

¿Dónde está? – Where is it?

Barcelona está al noroeste de España – Barcelona is in the norwest of Spain.

Antigua está en el sur del país – Antigua is in the south of the country.

 

We did a quick brainstorming of the different words we can use to describe a place.

Ruidosa – Noisy

Contaminada – Polluted

Limpia – Tidy

Ajetreada – Busy

Húmeda – Humid

Turística – Touristic

Seca – Dry

In pairs, we talked about different cities using the descriptions we had:

Una ciudad muy grande – A very big city

Londres, París, Madrid – London, Paris, Madrid

Una ciudad turística – A touristic city

Roma, Barcelona, Nueva York – Rome, Barcelona, New York

Una ciudad que está en el sur de Europa – A city which is in the south of Europe

Barcelona, Sevilla – Barcelona, Seville

Una ciudad muy moderna – A very modern city

Valencia, Bilbao

Una ciudad con una playa bonita – A city with a nice beach

Málaga, Huelva

Una ciudad que está en la costa – A city which is in the coast

Galway

 

We also completed some sentences with the verbs “ser” or “estar”

Es muy Antigua –It is an old city

Está en el sur de España – It is in the south of Spain

Está cerca de Sevilla – It is close to Seville

No es una ciudad muy importante – It is not a very important city

Está en la costa atlántica – It is on the Atlantic coast

Es famosa por sus playas – It is famous because of its beaches

Está lejos de Madrid – It is far from Madrid

Es bastante pequeña – It is pretty small

No está en el centro de España – It is not in the centre of Spain

 

We did a describing exercise and we guessed the cities we were talking about. Some words we did not understand:

Hay un río famoso – There is a famous river

Que va por el centro de la ciudad – That flows through the centre of the city

La ciudad del amor – The city of love

Un clima muy agradable – A very nice climate

Una ciudad con muchas autopistas – A city with plenty of motorways

Other words we learnt:

Autovía – Main roads in Spain. No need to pay for the toll

Autopista – Mains roads in Spain. Paying for the toll is compulsory

Carreteras convencionales – Other roads

 

To finish with, we did a listening exercise and we translated it.

Oye Esmeralda, tú no eres de Madrid, ¿verdad? – Hey Esmeralda, you are not from Madrid, are you?

No, soy de Segovia. ¿Has estado allí alguna vez? – No, I am from Segovia. Have you ever been there?

No – No.

Pues no sabes lo que te pierdes – You don’t know what you’re missing out.

Ya me imagino. Si te digo la verdad, no sé ni dónde está, exactamente. – I can imagine that. Honestly, I don’t even know where it is exactly.

Pues mira, Segovia está muy cerca de Madrid, a unos cien kilómetros al noroeste – Well look, Segovia is very close to Mad?rid, at around 100 kilometres up the northwest

Es una ciudad pequeña, ¿no? – It is a small city, isn’t it?

Sí, solo tiene unos cincuenta mil habitantes, aproximadamente – Yes, there is only around 50000 people living there, more or less

Y ¿cómo es? – And, what is it like?

Pues, es una ciudad antigua y muy bonita. No sé, es muy tranquila, pero también es bastante divertida, sobre todo los fines de semana – Well it is an old and beautiful city. I don’t know, it is quiet, but it is also rather fun, especially at weekends.

Y tiene un acueducto muy famoso, ¿verdad? – And it has a very famous bridge, doesn’t it?

Famosísimo. Espera, tengo unas fotos. Mira, este es el acueducto – Very very famous. Hold on, I have some pictures. Look, this is the bridge.

¡Qué bonito! ¿Y eso, qué es? – It is lovely! And what’s that?

La catedral. Es preciosa. – The cathedral. It is gorgeous.

¿Y esto? – And this?

Es una de las muchas Iglesias que tiene. No me acuerdo cómo se llama. – This is one of the many churches it has. I don’t remember its name.

Esto es el Alcázar y esto es la parte Antigua – This is the fortress and this is city’s old part.

¿Y eso? – And that?

Es una calle del barrio judío – It is a Street in the Jewish quarter.

Ah, ¿también tiene un barrio judío? – Oh, does it also have a Jewish quarter?

Sí, pero es muy pequeño – Yes, but it is very small.
